The 2013 Australian Open Tennis Championship is a showcase of the world’s best tennis players, and with such a wealth of strength and stamina on show, you may have been left feeling a little envious. But, thanks to the gurus behind a number of world tennis champions, you too can achieve the same strength and stamina as the players.
The experts behind tennis idols Sam Stosur and Zheng Jie, ranked World No 9 and World No 42 respectively, say you don’t have to be a professional to achieve world class health and fitness, and have revealed the secrets to achieving the physique of a pro tennis athlete. And if that’s what the experts are saying, then it must be true.

‘Periodise’ your training – Rather than doing the same routine month after month, modify your training program at regular intervals to keep your body working harder, while still giving it a rest. For example, if you run too easily and don’t push yourself, you won’t progress. And chances are you’l get bored. Professional athletes don’t play one sport at full intensity for 12 months straight and neither should you.
Build recovery into your plan – The body repairs and strengthens itself in the time between workouts. recovery will help your muscles and connective tissues to repair quicker, allowing you to train harder and more effectively the next time. Recovery is just as important as the hard work you’re doing, particularly in preventing injury.
Know your nutritional needs – Concentrate on working out what you need as an individual. Educate yourself about when and what you should be eating. It is important to ensure that you are complimenting your health regime and diet with valuable supplements. A professional athlete would never waste time on the latest fad diet and neither should you.
