Racy hair for Cup Week capers

The Melbourne Cup carnival kicks off this weekend with Derby Day – and so the week-long party begins around the country.

Whether spring racing festivities for you are about the horses or to socialise up a storm, hot hair is a must. So we’ve called on the experts for DIY ‘dos to make you dazzle, day or night.

From the folk at Clairol Herbal Essences we have three racy looks: The Wavy Braid, The Bun and The Chignon. Follow the simple steps here – and there’s also video tutorials to help you along the way.

THE WAVY BRAID

Feminine, fun and fuss-free, loose waves make the the perfect hair-down look to carry you into the night. This style has the added twist, if you like, of loose braids at either side of the head twined at the back. For day, the ‘do is best complemented by a hat or fascinator worn to the side. For evening, maybe a little bit of bling in the form of sparkly clips or hair pins.

What you will need: A hair straightener, hairspray and bobby pins. Of course, a good ‘do starts with healthy hair and products that will give it bounce and shine.  Try Herbal Essences Hello Hydration shampoo and conditioner, RRP $5.99 each.

Step 1: Lightly spray hair with a flexible hold hairspray. Try Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Hairspray, $6.99, or for firmer hold, Herbal Essences Set Me Up Hairspray Supersize, $8.99.

Step 2: Curl hair around hair straighteners, pulling away from root to tip.

Step 3: Spray hair with a medium hold hairspray.

Step 4: Secure fascinator in place.

Step 5: Loosely braid hair on alternate side and secure with bobby pins.

THE CHIGNON

The beautiful elegance of The Chignon adds a touch of chic to any outfit. The style works well with most headpieces, but to show the detail of the low bun, choose a smaller headpiece that sits slightly to the front or side.

What you will need: An elastic band, comb, hairspray and bobby pins.

Step 1: Part front section of hair and separate back section in a secure ponytail.

Step 2: Backcomb ponytail in large sections to create volume and spritz with hairspray.

Step 3: Lightly comb ponytail through to tidy up.

Step 4: Roll ponytail underneath to create chignon and secure in place with bobby pins.

Step 5: Finish with hairspray.

Step 6: Take half of front section and twist across back of head. Secure over chignon with bobby pins:

Step 7: Repeat on other side and spray with hairspray:

Step 8: Secure fascinator in place:

THE BUN

Allow a statement outfit and flawless make-up to shine by sweeping your hair into a voluminous up-do with The Bun. Simple and wearable throughout the day, this look is best worn with a fascinator at an angle, or with a dainty headband or flower.

What you will need: An elastic band, comb, brush and bobby pins.

Step 1: Secure hair in tight high ponytail and spray with hairspray.

Step 2: Backcomb ponytail in large sections to create volume and spray with hairspray.

Step 3: Lightly brush ponytail through to tidy up.

Step 4: Grip ponytail in one hand. Hold base of ponytail using free hand and wrap ponytail around to form bun and secure in place with bobby pins.

Step 5: Secure fascinator in place.

Top Tip: The Herbal Essences None of Your Frizzness Smooth Lovin’ Serum is the perfect quick fix for fly-aways and small enough to fit in your purse on race day, ensuring your hair styles will last the distance.
