How often do you tell lies?
However, women proved more likely to tell a lie when faced with certain situations, including their shopping habits. Of the women surveyed, 39% admitted they felt the need to lie about their latest shopping purchases, whereas just 26% of men do the same.
Women are also more inclined to lie in order to avoid unwanted phone calls, with 50% pretending to be busier than they really are. Just over a third of men admitted to this behaviour.
The research indicated that many opt to tell lies simply in order to make life a little easier. Twenty per cent of responders felt that lying to a boss about pulling a ‘sickie’ was acceptable, and 13% believe it’s not harmful to lie to a partner about an affair. However, some are more motivated by the need to save money, with a quarter of drivers admitting to lying during their car insurance application in order to get a better deal.
So, seeing as we all do it, is lying ok, or should we strive to lead an honest life? Speaking to the Express, Karen Pine, a professor of developmental psychology, said she believes we should all brush up on our skills as the art of lying is in fact a vital characteristic of human beings.
‘We think lying is bad, but actually the ability to deceive others has helped humans survive as a species,’ she said.
